'The Voice of the Universe' is a phrase
I use to describe something that is difficult to describe with
words. It is not a sound, but it is not not-sound. It is not
God, but it is not not-God. Zen masters and students seem ever
obsessed with this sort of thing - describing the indescribable.
In most cases, the students - and most 'masters' - fail. When
students ask, 'What is the nature of God?', or any similar question, It
is common, if not universal, for teachers of all persuasions - Christian
or Buddhist alike - to respond with words.
From these words, enormous and tedious volumes are written by so-called
'masters' who collect hordes of 'students'. These then follow the
words joyfully into the waiting jaws of oblivion. Why?
Because they think that the words were the answer to their
question; then they study these words for their meaning. In
reality, the teacher was urgently pointing to the real answer - an
answer that could not be expressed in words - to awaken the student's
inner awareness. I have read ten times
tens of explanations about teachers' words, but these all use more words
- thereby displaying their grand lack of understanding. If I were
so vain as to think that future generations will study the words I wrote
now, I should hope that they would add no commentary, and collect no
students. I hope that they will realize that I am not writing to
describe or explain; rather, I am urgently pointing to the ultimate
reality of all things.
When you watch a sunset, do you need
any commentary? When you hear, 'Do unto others as you would have
them to unto you', do you really need a sermon to explain it? When
you smell a flower, can any words add to your direct experience?
This is what is meant by the Zen maxim, 'Only the one drinking knows how
hot the tea is.'
When I speak to you, I am not only
speaking to you about the voice of the universe, I am speaking to
you with and in the voice of the universe. You are
listening to a story that tells itself; you are looking at the eye in
the mirror that looks back; the hand that touches and the hand that
feels are the same.
The voice that you are
hearing
in your head now
is my voice,
and your voice,
and our voice,
and the Voice of the Universe.
I invite you to listen.
