SHANE STEINKAMP'S BACKPACKING BASE CAMP

JUMP TO SITE MAP

I have not updated this site in some time, and I am way behind. Keep checking back. In the next few weeks I will be adding more pages and content as time goes on.

Welcome to The Place With No Name's Special Outdoor Recreation Section.   I created this, as a work in progress, to help me organize my thoughts about traveling in the back country.  You can select a link to the left to begin. If you are looking for the journal with trip reports and pictures, then select SHANE under the JOURNAL heading to the left.

If you are just starting out, some definitions might be helpful.  What exactly is 'outdoor recreation' anyway?  This 'outdoor recreation' catch all is a popular turn of phrase, but what does it really mean?  It's really not that hard.  Remember when your parents would yell, "It's too nice to stay inside all day!  Go play outside!"?  Well, once you got out from under the roof, that was outdoor recreation.  If you walked down the street to a friend's house, that's hiking.  If you convinced your parents to let you sleep one night under a sheet supported by two chairs in the back yard, that's camping.

Backpacking is a combination 'sport' that includes hiking and camping.  Of course, just like when you camped in your back yard, you need certain stuff to actually camp with, but you need some way to carry it while hiking.  Some brilliant genius invented a thing called a backpack a few thousand years ago, and backpacking was born.

This website is a work in progress.  There are, in fact, hundreds of great sites on the web about hiking.  Unfortunately, I couldn't find one that covers all the basics in a basic way for someone just starting out.  Most people assume you are an expert already, and talk about something while assuming you know what they're talking about.  A lot of sites also don't warn new folks about various dangers that they should appreciate up front.  This site is designed with the new hiker in mind - those beginner backpackers who are just starting out.  Once you've got the basics, go hiking.

Many of the things you will find here are based on experience and opinion.  Use what works for you and discard the rest.  If you have a suggestion, comment, concern, please use the form at the bottom of any page.  Be sure to include your email address if you want a reply.

If you aren't sure where to begin, read the page entitled "Where do I begin?", or select something that looks interesting to you from the site map below.

Thanks,

Shane Steinkamp
