BACKPACKGEARTEST.ORG UNOFFICIAL HELP PAGE
EXCESS LINE SPACING
 BY SHANE STEINKAMP

The subject comes up, from time to time, that there are extra line spaces in reports.

The problem stems from Word. You are using the ENTER key to create a line break. Word actually interprets this as a Paragraph break, and in HTML, that's the <P> ... </P> tags. Paragraphs, in HTML, get an extra space - hence the double spacing.

In order to correct this, do not use the ENTER key to create line breaks. Instead, use SHIFT-ENTER. This inserts a true line break, instead of a Paragraph break. That's the <BR> tag in HTML.

In order to fix your report, open the original Word document, locate your cursor at the end of each line where the extra spacing is appearing, hit DELETE until the next paragraph becomes part of the first one, then hit SHIFT-ENTER. Looks the same, but VERY different in HTML. If you want two spaces, just hit SHIFT-ENTER twice.

If you are using FrontPage, and want to paste some text into FrontPage, open the original report (in Word or whatever), copy all the text, open a new document in FrontPage, right click in the open page, select PASTE SPECIAL, select Normal Paragraphs, and click OK.

This will paste the text in without the troublesome formatting...

This has been a service of the unofficial BGT Help Desk.
