HURRICANE GUSTAV

Back To Work

04 SEP - 9:15 AM

I came into the office this morning.  We have all services except internet - which kills half my comms.  I took some pictures on the way in.  Nothing too exciting.  Traffic lights are out in many places.  Power is still spotty all over.

Last night Virginia built the Great Wall of China.

Pulling out the driveway, the street is clean.  I've got enough fuel in the tank to carry me around.

Another shot of the street.  Looks pretty normal.

Some fences down.

I was surprised to see this.  The entire roof on this brand new house was torn off.
No other house in this new development lost a single shingle.

Airline Drive is closed at Causeway.

I'm at home now.  No internet at the office.  I've got work to do, so I won't update again until much later today.

***

I was sent home to work where I have internet.  I'm on call.

I brought one client back on line, and I've been on call.  The shot above is just inside the front door.  Lots of leaves and some water blew in.

I've organized things for my day tomorrow, which should be jumping.  The kitchen is in full swing, and we should have 14 people tonight.  If anybody needs a hot meal and a bed, we're open.

I was trying not to get too uptight about things going on, but I'm starting to get tired of government officials coming on the radio and taking credit for the progress that is being made in various communities.  "We've got this and that...blah...blah...blah..."  Government doesn't provide electricity.  They have no responsibility when it's down, and they can't take credit when it goes back on.

My front yard is a parking lot.  There are actually three more not in this shot.  Now we're 14 people, 6 dogs, 1 cat, and 3 turtles.

Well, if there's gonna be comp'ny, best feed 'em.  Ready!

Set!

Go!

We had some kind of lime something tenderloin, BBQ wings and legs, cheesy mac, a nice salad,
baked sweet potatoes (with fixin's), and any kind of beverage you could want.  Hurricane recovery is hungry work...

Holy smokes!  Invisible children!

My BIL sanitizing counters.  If that bleach don't work, he'll draw down on them germs!
I joked about the small difference between genocide and germicide.
My BIL is a mass murderer, just on a very small scale...

We had the cleanup run and entire kitchen sanitized in record time.  Ready to go again tomorrow.

Late night ice cream.

Tomorrow I'm scheduled for Belle Chasse in Plaquemines Parish, which is now open.  I'll be up later in the afternoon when Kenner comes back on the power grid. Updates as time allows.  We'll be feeding folks again tomorrow.  We have families in every bedroom.  It's like a non-stop house party, but with kids around...
